2025 Romeo + Juliet - Directed by Gayle Spence

Set at the Te Puna Quarry Park Ampitheatre in 2025

Our production of Shakespeare’s greatest love story explores the theme "these violent delights have violent ends," capturing the exhilarating chaos of love and fate amidst the backdrop of a somewhat turbulent and self-indulgent society. The world of the 1930s is alive with energy and allure, mirroring the play's thrilling, all-consuming journey of comedy, tragedy, and inevitability. At its heart lies the story of two young lovers, Romeo + Juliet; their love a fleeting calm in the eye of a storm, a fragile, luminous moment of hope in a world ruled by vengeance. The sharp contrast between levity and despair, underscores the duality of the human experience: comedy and tragedy intermingle as the characters, driven by passion, ego, and loyalty, collide in a narrative that feels as exhilarating as it is doomed. This Romeo + Juliet is a bittersweet journey of love and life, and the fleeting beautiful fragility of both. A heartfelt thank you from me to the awesomely talented and incredibly hardworking cast and crew, whose dedication, creativity, and passion have brought this vision to life. It is through their extraordinary efforts that this performance of Romeo + Juliet will resonate with all who experience it.
